Dr Avery has extensive plastic surgery experience in both Australia and New Zealand. His professional memberships include the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) and the Australasian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ASAPS).

Dr Avery graduated from the University of Sydney in Medicine in 2001 and also holds a Bachelor of Pharmacy. He completed his 10 years of specialist plastic surgical training in 2011 and has undertaken fellowships in Hand and Peripheral Nerve Surgery, Head and Neck Cancer Surgery and Paediatric Plastic Surgery including Cleft Lip and Palate.

Dr Avery’s first years as a Specialist Plastic Surgeon were spent gaining additional experience in Paediatric Plastic Surgery at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne. Dr Avery then spent time in Sydney gaining further experience in managing advanced Head and Neck cancer and its reconstruction as well as hand, nerve and microsurgery. He relocated to Newcastle in 2013 and has been helping patients of the Hunter region and beyond ever since.

Dr Avery decided to embark on a career in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery after training in the burns units of Sydney’s Concord Hospital and the Westmead Children’s Hospital. Caring for patients and families who were faced with the challenge of recovering from significant burns was a humbling and inspiring introduction to the specialty.

Outside of medicine, Gary is the proud father of three boys. He also enjoys basketball, trail running, ultra marathons and the beach. After relocating to Newcastle with his family he cannot imagine living anywhere else and feels privileged to be part of the local community.
