Dr Tom Goodsall is a Gastroenterologist and General Physician with special interest and expertise in inflammatory bowel disease as well as irritable bowel syndrome, bowel cancer prevention and general gastroenterology. Tom’s focus is on enhancement of patient experience and shared decision making. He also offers an open access endoscopy service for General Practitioners to facilitate rapid and simple care for patients.
Tom graduated from The University of Sydney School of Medicine in 2010 with honours and undertook his Gastroenterology and General Medicine Training in the Hunter New England region and completed a Masters of Clinical Epidemiology whilst training. After receiving Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of Physicians in 2019, Tom was awarded the GENIUS research fellow grant and worked as a clinical research fellow at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Adelaide. Whilst in Adelaide, Tom specialised in the management of inflammatory bowel diseases and gained experience in novel therapies, endoscopic techniques including chromoendoscopy and stricture dilatation, faecal microbiota transplant and intestinal ultrasound. Tom also completed training and expert accreditation in intestinal ultrasound for diagnosis and monitoring of bowel conditions including inflammatory bowel disease. He has commenced PhD candidature with a focus on
validating the use of intestinal ultrasound in Crohn’s disease and has published multiple studies in the field. Tom is passionate about medical education and holds clinical lecturer positions at the University of Newcastle and University of Adelaide.
Tom holds a Staff Specialist position at John Hunter Hospital as a Gastroenterologist and General Physician. He is also a Visiting Medical Officer at Alice Springs Hospital and Lake Macquarie Private Hospital. He remains actively involved in research and has published multiple papers in international peer reviewed journals. He is also active in clinical trials.
Tom provides his patients with specialist gastroenterologist services including consultation, colonoscopy, endoscopy, capsule endoscopy, and intestinal ultrasound. He consults at Hunter Gastroenterology and the John Hunter Hospital and provides endoscopic services at John Hunter Hospital, Lingard Private Hospital and Maitland Private Hospital.
Tom aims to deliver a high standard of patient focused care in a respectful, professional, collaborative and approachable manner. Tom lives in Newcastle with his GP wife and two daughters and enjoys spending time with family and surfing at Bar Beach and Catho.
