Specialising in Surgery of the Knee and Paediatric Orthopaedics
Dr James Coulthard studied medicine at the University of Newcastle, graduating in 2008. He was a junior doctor in the Hunter New England Health network and an orthopaedic trainee in the Newcastle training scheme.
He has recently returned from fellowships in adult and paediatric orthopaedics at The Oxford University Hospitals, The Mater Hospital Queensland and The Perth Children’s Hospital.
He currently has a minimal public waiting list and is happy to see public patients in his rooms in Newcastle or East Maitland.
AREAS OF PRACTICE
ADULT ORTHOPAEDICS
Focused on the care of the knee in adults.
Partial and total joint replacement with modern techniques including robotic surgery.
Use of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols, allowing early mobilisation, minimal opioids and shorter hospital stays.
Ligament and meniscal surgery.
PAEDIATRIC ORTHOPAEDICS
General paediatric orthopaedics.
Advanced management of complex problems in the knee, especially patellofemoral instability, ligament injuries and meniscal pathology in the very young patient.
Hip pathology from birth to adulthood.
TRAUMA SURGERY
On-call orthopaedics at The New Maitland Hospital, performing surgery on all necessary orthopaedic emergency presentations.
